Friday Five – the air up there

June 20, 2008

Thank you Scotty for getting a cool Friday Five going.  Today we grab our climbing gear, our ropes and karabiners, our boots, and hire a Sherpa so we can head up on the mountain.

  1. The Mountain – Steve Earle and the Del McCoury Band.  Steve went and recorded a full-fledged bluegrass album and proved the timelessness and genius of his songwriting.  Music this naked exposes any weaknesses in the songs, and Steve holds his own majestically.
  2. The Mountains Win Again – Blues Traveler.  I loved this song until it became a beer commercial.  This one features the usually awesome Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers Band, Gov’t Mule) on slide guitar.
  3. Mountain of Love – Johnny Rivers.  Totally underrated guitarist.
  4. Big Rock Candy Mountain – Harry McClintock.  Everybody knows this song.
  5. Rocky Mountain Way – Joe Walsh.  This one gets listed primarily for the way he introduces it.

Bonus – from 1965 here are the fabulous Ventures with Diamond Head.
