Friday Five – TV Theme Songs

April 11, 2008

Big surprise – I like TV theme songs that border on rock and roll.

  • The Munsters Theme.  Man this is good.  This surfy instrumental has been covered by a jillion bands, but my favorite cover is by Los Straitjackets.  I would watch this show just for the theme music, but it was funny as well.
  • Get Smart.  Again, wonderfully appropriate theme music.  Always a funny show.
  • Welcome Back Kotter – Welcome Back by John Sebastian.  When I was a kid my next door neighbor had a 45 of this song and I was sooooooo jealous.
  • Barney Miller.  Dig that bassline!  Dig that lead guitar!  Dig those horns!
  • Malcolm in the Middle – Boss of Me by They Might Be Giants.  “You’re not the boss of me” is a marvelous grammatical atrocity uttered by every child in these United States at one time or another.

I thought about the Munsters and Barney Miller too. There are a lot of good ones from way back when… Good list.
