My favorite Grammy moments.

February 13, 2008

The Grammy awards are always a trainwreck to watch. The wrong folks always get the awards. Too many “your album was OK but we’re really giving you this Grammy for some stuff you did 25 years ago” moments. Too many “this project was too pretentious for us to NOT give you a Grammy” moments.

But there are moments worth watching for. This year was no exception.

First, the funny one:

Way to go, Vince!

Notice Kanye’s sincere reaction? Anyone else think his famous fit-throwing and gigantic ego is nothing more than a very successful publicity stunt?

Now one that’s not so funny:

John Fogerty sharing a stage with Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. Not everyone will catch the irony, so here it is. Years ago Little Richard sued John Fogerty for plagiarism: Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Travelin’ Band” sounded a little too much like Little Richard’s “Good Golly Miss Molly” for Mr. Penniman’s taste. Fogerty claimed it was a tribute, a public nod to Richard’s sound. Little Richard won. To see the two of them onstage together, apparently noting that the water has long since passed under that bridge, was marvelous. Not to mention very racist comments Jerry Lee Lewis made about Richard back in the day. That water’s evidently under the bridge too.

In the midst of a silly awards show where the industry publicly pats itself on the back, a moment of true grace.

“…a moment of true grace.” Nicely put. And true.

Vince’s jab at Kanye is classic!
