When I was 18

June 6, 2007

John at Locusts and Honey has posted this meme (he picked it up from Jeff the Baptist). Here’s my response to the question, “What was the best song playing when you were 18?”

“Blood and Roses” by the Smithereens.

There was a lot of good music in 1986. Peter Gabriel released “So.” Steve Winwood’s “Back in the High Life” was also a good listen. REM’s “Life’s Rich Pageant,” Crowded House’s self-titled LP, and the first TMBG were released then too.

But it was the Smithereens blasting through the tiny speakers of the el-cheapo stereo in my flesh-colored 1982 Mercury Lynx that got my blood a pumpin’. Cruisin’ with my girlfriend (who is now my lovely wife, and she’s even hotter now than she was then!) by my side, singing along with “Behind the Wall of Sleep,” “Strangers When We Meet,” “Groovy Tuesday,” “In a Lonely Place,” and all the rest of ’em. Awwwwww yeah.

Big props to the Smithereens for wearing goatees waaaay before it was the cool facial hair choice.
