God just isn’t fair!

September 17, 2005

Wow. The parable of the workers in the vineyard. I love, love, love this story and I know just exactly how I want to preach it. The good news is that God just isn’t fair!

  • God’s concept of justice is not the same as our concept of fairness.
  • God’s ways are not our ways.
  • When we get caught up in our idea of fairness, like the workers who showed up early, we somehow find a way to believe that we deserve just a little more reward than the next guy. God just doesn’t work that way.
  • It’s not when we accept God’s invitation that matters; it’s not how hard we work after we accept God’s invitation that matters, it is simply that we accept God’s invitation that matters.

We want God to be fair! We want God to kill Cain for killing his brother. We want God to punish Jacob for stealing Esau’s inheritance. We want God to follow through on the promise to destroy Ninevah like Jonah. But those reactions are based on our view of fairness, NOT God’s view of Justice. And it also means that God’s grace is abundant even to rascals like me.
