CD of the Week: Los Lobos – “Ride This (The Covers EP)”

My only complaint with this CD – it’s too dang short!  It’s not just any band that can cover Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Richard Thompson, and the Blasters without sounding like just another bar band with great taste.  Los Lobos are not just any band, though, and they more than do justice to these tunes.

The highlight for me is their great take on “Shoot Out The Lights.”  David Hidalgo’s voice is perfect and the chords are right in the boys’ guitar wheelhouse.

Yeah, this was a companion EP to their excellent “The Ride” album, but it stands on its own as a great “put it in the car stereo and crank it up” disc.  You need it.  Bad.
